I couldn’t get the Oxygen theme to work

The Oxygen theme looked very attractive:

with some very powerful options, like a slider for the latest posts.

I spent most of the afternoon trying to get it work, and in the end threw up my hands in despair and switched back to my old faithful TwentyTwelve theme.
