I spent much of Friday working on my projected Yip Harburg musical, Over the Rainbow, then went to the Castle to sing a medley of Harburg’s two most famous songs, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime and Somewhere, Over the Rainbow.

♦ For more info on the musical, go to the Over the Rainbow – the Yip Harburg story page.

They used to tell me I was building a dream
And so I followed the mob.
When there was earth to plough or guns to bear,
I was always there, right on the job.

They used to tell me I was building a dream
With peace and glory ahead
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There’s a  land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true

Once, in khaki suits, gee, we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodle de-dum;
Half a million boots went sloggin’ through Hell –
And I was the guy with the drum.

Say, don’t you remember, they called me Al?
It was Al all the time.
Say, don’t you remember?  I’m your pal.
Brother can you spare  a   dime?

Some day I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemondrops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Once I built a railroad, made it run,
Made it race against time;
Once I build a railroad – now it’s done.
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once I built a tower to the sun,
Brick and rivet and lime;
Once I build a tower – now it’s done.
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why then, oh why can’t I?

Brother, can you spare a dime?
