Song: The Ballad of Richard III

Richard he was handsome, Richard he was kind
And he came down from Yorkshire to seek the people’s mind.
The land was torn apart by war, the white rose and the red,
But Richard promised peace on earth and this is what they said:

chorus:

Richard, Richard, Richard the Third,
You are the people’s champion, and we won’t be deterred.
Give us what we want and take your place upon the throne.
Forget the bloody barons and we’ll give you the crown.

Richard called a parliament and gave them extra powers
But the barons hated him and in the midnight hours
They plotted civil war and raised an army in the west.
The people rallied to his cause and all hoped for the best

(they sang)

chorus:

Richard, Richard, Richard the Third,
You are the people’s champion, and we won’t be deterred.
You gave us what we want and took your place upon the throne.
You beat the bloody barons and we gave you the crown.

The armies met at Bosworth field but Richard was betrayed,
Abandoned by his so-called friends and in a coffin laid.
Henry Tudor seized the throne, the killing then began,
And soon they started up their propaganda plan.

They made him out a villain, a hunchback evildoer,
A murderer of children, an oppressor of the poor.
It’s sad that people can forget, so soon believe the lies
Of turncoat lords and traitors, can’t see beneath disguise.

chorus:

Richard, Richard, Richard the Third,
He was the people’s champion, and they were not deterred.
He gave them what they wanted, took his place upon the throne.
He beat the bloody barons but he didn’t keep the crown.

Unhappy lands need heroes but history forgets
No time for looking backward, no time for sad regrets
Leaders may betray us, dark triumph over light,
The spinning earth keeps turning, day follows darkest night.

What Richard did’s forgotten, the barons won the game of war
Though they blacken Richard’s name what we were fighting for
Is immortal, like the people, is eternal, true
No barons can defeat us no matter what they do.

chorus:

Richard, Richard, Richard the Third,
He was the people’s champion, and they were not deterred.
He gave them what they wanted, took his place upon the throne.

He beat the bloody barons but he didn’t keep the crown.
